The Royal Stag, c. 1870. Creator: James Valentine (British, 1815-1880)

The Royal Stag, c. 1870. One of the earliest photographs in this exhibition, James Valentines Royal Stag possesses a rare spontaneity, both for photographs of this period and for still-life images in general. In photographing a royal stag (one with antlers of twelve or more branches), Valentine gave the animal the appearance of one that had just fallen in the bright light of midday. Because the technology of the day required a nearby darkroom where the exposed negative plate could be processed immediately, it is likely that the felled stag was arranged into its artistic pose by the photographer or his staff. Valentine was a distinguished topographical and landscape photographer, printer, and publisher whose Dundee-based company became the largest and best equipped in the United Kingdom. His accomplishments were recognized when in 1868 he was appointed Photographer to the Queen

The Royal Stag, c. 1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph that showcases the rare spontaneity and artistic vision of James Valentine, a renowned British photographer. This particular image stands out not only for its time but also within the genre of still-life photography. Valentine's skillful composition captures a majestic royal stag with antlers boasting twelve or more branches. The animal appears as if it has just fallen under the bright midday light, lending an air of authenticity to the scene. However, due to the limitations of technology during that era, it is likely that Valentine or his team arranged the felled stag into this striking pose before capturing it on film. James Valentine was widely recognized for his expertise in topographical and landscape photography, as well as being a printer and publisher. His company based in Dundee became one of the largest and best-equipped establishments in all of Britain. In fact, his remarkable achievements led him to be appointed Photographer to the Queen in 1868. This albumen print from a wet collodion negative exemplifies both Valentine's technical mastery and his ability to infuse life into still subjects. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this historic piece serves as a testament to Valentine's enduring legacy within British photography.
