Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, 1946. Creator: Piper Aircraft Corp
Single engine, two seat, high wing, monoplane, yellow and red, first light aircraft to fly around the world. From August 9 to December 10, 1947, Clifford Evans and George Truman circled the globe in their Piper Super Cruisers, covering 35, 897 kilometers (22, 436 miles), the first time light personal aircraft accomplished such a feat. Evans flew the City of Washington while Truman flew the City of The Angels, now at the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The PA-12 was a more powerful J-5 Cruiser, with an electric starter, navigation lights, and a cabin heater. For the flight, Piper Aircraft arranged for second-hand planes and extra fuel tanks while radio and navigation equipment were also donated. Evans built a drift meter for each aircraft. Flags of each nation they visited were hand-painted on the fuselages left sides and 53 of 55 city stops on the right sides

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, a remarkable aircraft that made history in 1947. Created by the esteemed Piper Aircraft Corp, this single-engine, two-seat high-wing monoplane stands out with its vibrant yellow and red color scheme. What sets this aircraft apart is its groundbreaking achievement of being the first light personal aircraft to successfully circumnavigate the globe. From August 9 to December 10,1947, pilots Clifford Evans and George Truman embarked on an extraordinary journey in their respective Piper Super Cruisers named "City of Washington" and "City of The Angels". Covering an impressive distance of 35,897 kilometers (22,436 miles), they achieved what was previously thought impossible for light aircraft. This historic feat earned them a place in aviation history. Now housed at the prestigious Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, these legendary planes continue to inspire awe among aviation enthusiasts. The PA-12 model boasted enhanced features such as an electric starter, navigation lights, and a cabin heater compared to its predecessor J-5 Cruiser. To commemorate their global expedition and pay homage to each visited nation along their route, flags were meticulously hand-painted on the left sides of both fuselages. With only two stops missed out of fifty-five city visits during their epic journey around the world. This photograph not only captures a significant moment in aviation but also represents innovation and determination that pushed boundaries during the mid-twentieth century. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and highlights how technology continues to shape our world today.
