The Last Photograph of Sergeant Willie Tiffany, Spanish-American War

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This poignant photograph captures a significant moment in American history. Taken on June 12,1898, it shows four men boarding the troopship "Matteawan" at Port Tampa, Florida, USA. Among them is Sergeant Willie Tiffany, a brave soldier who fought in the Battle of San Juan Heights during the Spanish-American War. Sergeant Tiffany's story is one of both triumph and tragedy. Having survived the intense battle unscathed, he was awarded a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant for his bravery. However, fate had other plans for him. Like many Rough Riders serving in Cuba at that time, he fell victim to yellow fever or malaria and tragically lost his life. The image not only captures this group of soldiers preparing to embark on their journey but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for their country during this tumultuous period. The solemn expressions on their faces hint at the uncertainty and dangers they were about to face overseas. Photographer Burr McIntosh accompanied these soldiers as both reporter and photographer for "Leslies Weekly" providing firsthand coverage of the war. His book "The Little I Saw of Cuba" immortalizes these moments through powerful photographs like this one. As we gaze upon this print over a century later, we are reminded not only of Sergeant Willie Tiffany's sacrifice but also of all those who have served their countries with courage and honor throughout history.
