The "Lion"of a party. God shield us! A lion among ladies is a most dreadful

The " Lion" of a party. God shield us! A lion among ladies is a most dreadful thing - Shakespeare, 1844. A subtle Italian, no less a man than the Count Pecchio, has called London " the grave of great reputations." In simple, prosaic phrase, this our glorious metropolis is a vast cemetery for " Lions !" They are whelped every season, and, frail and evanescent as buttercups, they every season die; that is, they do not die body and bones, but have a most fatal cutaneous and depilatory disorder - a mortality that goes skin-deep, and little more - a disease that strips them of their hide, and tail, and mane; yea, that makes the very " lions" that but a few months since shook whole coteries with the thunder of their voices, roar as " gently as any sucking- doves". From " Pictorial Times", 1844

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, we are transported back to the 19th century, a time when London was deemed the "grave of great reputations". The image depicts a gathering of distinguished gentlemen, dressed in their finest attire. Among them stands a man who commands attention - the "Lion" of the party. Quoting Shakespeare's timeless words from 1844, we are reminded that encountering a lion among ladies is an awe-inspiring and fearsome sight. This subtle Italian Count Pecchio aptly describes London as a vast cemetery for these majestic creatures known as "Lions". The artist skillfully captures the transience of fame and reputation through his depiction. These Lions emerge every season, only to fade away like delicate buttercups. Their mortality lies not in their physical bodies but rather in their superficiality; they suffer from a cutaneous disorder that strips them of their external grandeur. Once roaring with thunderous voices that shook entire social circles, these Lions now meekly coo like gentle doves. The engraving portrays one such Lion amidst his peers - confidently wearing his monocle and stylish waistcoat. This evocative image serves as both an homage to William Shakespeare's profound observation on society and a reminder that even those who seem invincible can be brought down by vanity and fleeting popularity. It invites us to reflect on our own desires for recognition while cautioning against becoming mere shadows in history's graveyard of forgotten Lions.
