This evocative lithograph, "L'Execution de L'Armistice; Les territoires que rendit ou livra aux Allies la defaite allemande" (The Execution of the Armistice: The Territories Surrendered or Delivered to the Allies by the Defeated Germans), was created by Italian artist P Pollacchi in 1918. The image is taken from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. The print depicts the momentous occasion of the signing of the Armistice, which brought an end to the devastating First World War in Europe. The map-like background illustrates the territories that Germany was forced to cede to the victorious Allied powers. The German delegation, led by Matthias Erzberger, is shown signing the document under the watchful eyes of Allied military leaders, including General Foch and Field Marshal Haig.
