Our Lady of Good Counsel, c. 1680. Creator: Bartolome Perez (Spanish, 1634-1693)
Our Lady of Good Counsel, c. 1680. This painting loosely and inventively depicts an actual chapel in the former Jesuit Imperial College in Madrid, which housed a Madonna and Child in gilded and painted wood, a focus of popular devotion. Perez made temporary decorations for the Spanish court, none of which survive, but the fanciful architecture, curiously inverted obelisks, fruits and flowers, and pastel colours all stem from this side of his work. By representing a polychrome sculpture in two dimensions, Perez further blurred boundaries between painting and sculpture. This intersection of the spiritual and the real worlds was important in Spanish art of the 1600s

Our Lady of Good Counsel, c. 1680
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers to the former Jesuit Imperial College in Madrid during the 17th century. Created by Bartolome Perez, a talented Spanish artist from 1634 to 1693, this painting beautifully captures an actual chapel within the college where a Madonna and Child sculpture resided. Perez's artistic style shines through in this piece as he combines elements of both painting and sculpture. The fanciful architecture, inverted obelisks, vibrant fruits and flowers, and soft pastel colors all showcase his inventiveness and creativity. By representing the polychrome sculpture on a two-dimensional surface, Perez blurs the boundaries between different art forms. In Spanish art of the 1600s, there was great significance placed on merging spiritual and real worlds. This intersection can be seen in "Our Lady of Good Counsel" where religious devotion meets artistic expression. The gilded and painted wood Madonna and Child were objects of popular worship at the time. Although none of Perez's temporary decorations for the Spanish court have survived over time, this print allows us to appreciate his skillful craftsmanship centuries later. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, it serves as a testament to Spain's rich cultural heritage. This Heritage Art/Heritage Images print offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in history while admiring Bartolome Perez's unique interpretation of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
