The Labors of Hercules: Hercules and the Columns of Gades, 1545. Creator: Hans Sebald Beham

The Labors of Hercules: Hercules and the Columns of Gades, 1545. Beham was one of several German printmakers referred to today as the " Little Masters." They established their artistic prowess by engraving remarkably small prints, appealing to collectors fascinated with miniature objects and curiosities. Here, Beham has packed 12 larger-than-life stories of the mighty Hercules into tiny prints. The series includes three of the 12 labors Hercules performed as penance for slaying his children in a fit of madness: Strangling the Nemean Lion, Killing the Lernean Hydra, and Dragging Cerberus from the Underworld. The other scenes depict tales from his life and the events preceding his death. The son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmena, Hercules was both man and god. His saga of moral and physical trials made him one of the most popular classical heroes in Renaissance art

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Labors of Hercules: Hercules and the Columns of Gades" created by Hans Sebald Beham in 1545. Beham, known as one of the renowned "Little Masters" was part of a group of German printmakers who gained recognition for their exceptional skill in engraving remarkably small prints. These miniature works fascinated collectors with their intricate details and curiosities. In this particular series, Beham masterfully condenses twelve larger-than-life stories depicting the mighty Hercules into tiny prints. Three labors are highlighted, which were undertaken by Hercules as penance for slaying his children during a fit of madness. These include Strangling the Nemean Lion, Killing the Lernean Hydra, and Dragging Cerberus from the Underworld. Additionally, other scenes portray significant events from his life leading up to his death. Hercules, born as both man and god to Jupiter and mortal Alcmena, became one of Renaissance art's most popular classical heroes due to his saga filled with moral and physical trials. This stunning engraving captures not only Beham's artistic prowess but also offers an insight into Renaissance admiration for mythological narratives. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this piece serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic excellence within German culture during the 16th century (1500-1550).
