Keuta, in the Bolan Pass, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Keuta, in the Bolan Pass, 1857. View...engraved from a sketch by Captain Malcolm Green, H.E.I.C.[Honourable East India Company]S. It shows the small village of Keerta, one of the few halting-places in the celebrated Bolan Pass, on the high-road to Affghanistan and Persia, from India; a locality of considerable interest in our present position with Persia. The Bolan is not so much a "pass" over a lofty range as a continuous succession of ravines and gorges, its length being between fifty-four and fifty- five miles; the highest point in the right of the view is the Camel's Hump Mountain. The pass is very important in a military point of view: it will be recollected that in 1839, the Bengal column of the Army of the Indus spent six days in marching through the pass, entering it on the 16th and leaving it on the 21st of March'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white wood engraving depicts the small village of Keuta, nestled in the heart of the Bolan Pass, a crucial military and geographical location in the nineteenth century. The Bolan Pass, not to be confused with a traditional pass over a mountain range, is a continuous succession of ravines and gorges, spanning approximately fifty-four to fifty-five miles. The highest point in the view is the Camel's Hump Mountain. The Bolan Pass holds significant historical importance, as it was a vital halting place on the high-road to Afghanistan and Persia from India. In 1839, the Bengal column of the British Army of the Indus spent six days traversing the pass, entering it on the 16th and leaving it on the 21st of March. This engraving, created from a sketch by Captain Malcolm Green for the Illustrated London News in 1857, offers a glimpse into the rugged terrain and architectural features of this remote region. The buildings and fortresses in the village of Keuta appear as small, isolated structures amidst the vast expanse of mountains and gorges. The Anglo-Persian War, which began in 1856, added further significance to the Bolan Pass as a strategic military location. The Pass's control was a point of contention between the British and Persian forces, making this engraving an intriguing snapshot of a time when global powers vied for influence in Asia. This image, with its rich history and intriguing details, is a testament to the beauty and complexity of the world during the nineteenth century.
