Humane Societys iceman, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Humane Societys iceman, 1844. Man employed to rescue people who fell through broken ice while skating in the winter. The Serpentine River, in Hyde Park [in London], was entirely frozen over; the ice was however, not more than an inch and a half thick, and was, therefore, dangerous. During the day full 5000 persons ventured, at the risk of their lives, upon the ice, notwithstanding the repeated cautions they received from the icemen of the Royal Humane Society. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the heroic work of the Humane Society's iceman in 1844. The image showcases a man employed by the society, dedicated to rescuing individuals who had fallen through broken ice while skating on the frozen Serpentine River in Hyde Park, London. The scene depicted is both awe-inspiring and alarming. Despite repeated cautions from these brave icemen, an astonishing 5000 people risked their lives by venturing onto dangerously thin ice throughout the day. This engraving, sourced from "Illustrated London News" of that time, serves as a stark reminder of human determination and vulnerability. The unknown creator has masterfully captured this nineteenth-century emergency service worker in full length attire. Notably equipped with a life jacket and rope, he symbolizes hope amidst perilous circumstances. As we gaze upon this historic photograph today, it reminds us of the selfless actions taken by those who dedicate themselves to saving lives. It also prompts reflection on our own choices when faced with danger or warnings given for our protection.
