The Hon. John Alexander MacDonald, Premier of Canada, 1858. Creator: Unknown
The Hon. John Alexander MacDonald, Premier of Canada, 1858. In 1838 he successfully defended a large number of prisoners implicated in the rebellion of 1837-8; and again, in 1839, his professional services were engaged for the defence of the so-called General Von Schultz, a prominent leader of a numerous band of American sympathisers, who, with ten of his misguided followers, paid the forfeit of their lives for their insane attempt to revolutionise Canada...His powers as a debater are of a high order, and nowhere has he been more successful or more in his element than in the Parliamentary arena, where his varied knowledge combined with profound acquaintance with constitutional law, and singular perspicuity and ingenuity, have left him without a rival'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures The Hon. John Alexander Macdonald, a prominent figure in Canadian history, during his tenure as Premier of Canada in 1858. Macdonald's legal career began in Scotland where he gained a reputation as a formidable debater and skilled attorney. In the 1830s, he successfully defended a large number of prisoners implicated in the rebellion of 1837-38. His services were also sought for the defense of General von Schultz, a leader of American sympathizers who were executed for their failed attempt to revolutionize Canada. Macdonald's oratorical abilities were unmatched, particularly in the Parliamentary arena. His extensive knowledge of constitutional law, combined with his singular perspicacity and ingenuity, made him unrivaled. This image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, highlights Macdonald's professional attire and serious demeanor, reflecting his status as a respected and accomplished lawyer and statesman. Born in Scotland, Macdonald immigrated to Canada in 1843 and quickly became involved in politics, serving as Attorney General and later becoming the first Prime Minister of Canada in 1867. His contributions to Canadian history are significant, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape.
