The Graphic

EDITORS COMMENTS
Stanley Number: The Emin Pasha Relief Committee, 1890 This striking photograph, titled "The Graphic Number: The Emin Pasha Relief Committee," was published in "The Graphic: An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper" in 1890. The image captures a group of determined and focused men, gathered together for a noble cause. At the center of the photograph stands Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a British explorer renowned for his daring expeditions. Stanley's most famous achievement was locating the missing explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, in 1871, famously greeting him with the words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" However, in 1888, Stanley embarked on a new mission: the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Emin Pasha was the governor of Equatoria, a region in present-day Sudan, and was surrounded by enemy forces. Stanley led an expedition to rescue him, with the support of the British government and the backing of various philanthropic organizations, including the Emin Pasha Relief Committee. In this photograph, Stanley is shown surrounded by his team, which includes John Rowlands, another British explorer, and various other men. They all appear focused and resolute, ready to embark on their dangerous mission to save Emin Pasha. The image is a testament to the power of human determination and the spirit of exploration and relief that defined the Victorian era. The photograph is a valuable historical document, providing a glimpse into the preparations for one of the most significant expeditions of the late 19th century. Despite being from an unknown photographer, the image remains an important piece of history, capturing the essence of a pivotal moment in the annals of exploration and humanitarian efforts.
