EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the iconic Globe Theatre in Bankside, Southwark, London as it appeared in 1598. The wood engraving, based on a contemporary drawing, beautifully captures the essence of this historic landmark. The original Globe Theatre holds immense significance in the world of literature and performing arts. It was here that several of William Shakespeare's timeless plays were staged, transporting audiences into worlds filled with love, tragedy, and comedy. However, its existence was short-lived as it fell victim to the Puritans' disapproval and was closed down in 1642. Eventually demolished to make way for tenements, its memory remained etched within the hearts of theater enthusiasts. Fast forward to 1997 when a new Globe Theatre rose from the ashes just 200 yards away from its original location. Built according to an Elizabethan plan, this modern incarnation pays homage to its predecessor while providing a platform for contemporary performances rooted in tradition. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by an unknown creator and featuring William Shakespeare himself (though not part of any specific company), we are reminded of the enduring power of art throughout history. This print serves as a testament to both England's rich cultural heritage and Shakespeare's profound influence on drama worldwide. Whether you're an admirer of Tudor architecture or simply appreciate the magic created within these hallowed walls centuries ago, this print is sure to transport you back in time with every glance.
