EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken by renowned American photography studio Harris & Ewing in 1912, we see Prince Henry of Prussia (left) and his younger brother, Prince Christian of Hesse and by Rhine (right), both dressed in their military uniforms, as they pay a visit to the United States with the German Squadron. The squadron, consisting of several German warships, had arrived in the country for a goodwill tour, and the princes accompanied the fleet as part of the German royal family's diplomatic mission. The brothers, who were the sons of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, are seen standing on the deck of a ship, surrounded by other naval officers and men. Prince Henry, who was the eldest son and heir to the German throne, is wearing the uniform of a German Admiral, complete with a cap adorned with gold braid and a long, double-breasted coat. His brother, Prince Christian, who was the Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, is dressed in the uniform of a German Navy Captain. Both princes exude an air of authority and confidence as they engage with the crew and other dignitaries on board. The photograph, which is a glass negative in the collection of the Library of Congress, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and military uniforms of the early 20th century. The crisp, white uniforms of the German naval officers contrast sharply with the dark background of the ship's deck, while the princes' decorative caps and insignia add visual interest to the image. Overall, this photograph provides a unique window into a bygone era of naval warfare, diplomacy, and royal pageantry.
