EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting, titled "Exterieur de l'hopital blinde" (Exterior of the Shell-proof Field Hospital, Citadel of Antwerp, 1832), was created by the renowned French artist Auguste Raffet in 1833. The image is part of a series of 24 prints documenting the siege of the Citadel of Antwerp, which took place from November 30 to December 23, 1832. The painting depicts the exterior of a shell-proof field hospital located within the Citadel of Antwerp, a historic fortification in the city of Antwerp, Belgium. The Citadel, which dates back to the 17th century, served as a military stronghold and was a key target during the siege. On the left side of the painting, a regiment of soldiers can be seen standing guard, their uniforms a stark contrast against the muted tones of the fortifications. The hospital itself is protected by gabions, large containers filled with earth and stones, which were used to deflect incoming shells. The hospital was coated with a lacquer to further protect it from the elements and the impact of shells. The painting offers a glimpse into the historic military defense structures of the Low Countries during the 19th century. It is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the military engineers and medical personnel of the time, who worked tirelessly to provide care for the wounded soldiers amidst the chaos of war. This beautiful watercolor is a valuable addition to any art or history collection, and a reminder of the rich heritage of European military history. The painting is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of Belgium, France, or the military.
