Ekas, Bengal Presidency, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. Creator: Unknown

Ekas, Bengal Presidency, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. The Eka is one of the many forms of Indian vehicles, and derives its name from ek ("one") from its being pulled by one horse. The most common vehicle is perhaps the bilee, from bile and ox, by which it is driven. This last is slow and lumbering, and might be called "growler", like our own four-wheeled cab; while the eka, with its horse, being lighter in construction, is the "hansom" of the locality'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1876, showcases an enchanting scene of Ekas, a horse-drawn vehicle commonly used in the Bengal Presidency during the 19th century. The name Ekas is derived from the Sanskrit word 'ek,' meaning 'one,' as it is pulled by a solitary horse. In contrast to the slower and heavier bilee, which is akin to our own four-wheeled cab, the Ekas is a lighter and more agile vehicle, earning it the nickname 'hansom' of the region. The driver, dressed in traditional Indian attire, sits confidently atop the vehicle, his head adorned with a distinctive headdress or turban. The horse, with its regal bearing, seems to relish its role as the powerful engine of this transportation marvel. The print, which is both engraved and hand-colored, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of India during the British colonial era. The intricacies of the horse's trappings, the vibrant colors of the driver's attire, and the rugged terrain of the road all contribute to the overall charm of this timeless image. This photograph print, a treasure from the past, offers a unique perspective on the daily life and transportation methods of the Bengali people during the 19th century. It is a testament to the enduring allure of the past and the power of art to transport us to another time and place.
