EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Edward Whymper, a renowned British mountaineer, in 1865. Whymper is most famously remembered for his pivotal role in the first successful ascent of the formidable Matterhorn that same year. Accompanied by Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Hadow, and expert guides Michel Croz and Peter Taugwalder (both father and son), Whymper triumphantly reached the summit. Tragically, during their descent, Hadow, Croz, Hudson, and Douglas lost their lives in a devastating fall. Despite this harrowing experience on the Matterhorn, Whymper's passion for exploration endured. He continued to embark on thrilling expeditions across Greenland, South America, and even ventured into the majestic Canadian Rockies. This extraordinary photograph comes from People - an enlightening volume delving into various aspects of origin and early history compiled by Readers Union at London's Grosvenor Press in 1956. The image has been skillfully colorized to breathe new life into this black-and-white snapshot from history. In it we see Whymper dressed impeccably in a tweed suit with his trusty alpenstock by his side – a symbol of his mountaineering prowess. The portrait exudes both Victorian charm and an air of adventure as it captures the spirit of a man who fearlessly pushed boundaries amidst breathtaking mountain ranges. As we gaze upon this remarkable print capturing Edward Whymper frozen in time against the backdrop of Europe's awe-inspiring Alps range; we are reminded not only of his incredible achievements but also of humanity's enduring quest for discovery and conquest over nature's grandest challenges.
