Designed Protestant church on Mount Zion - present state of the building, 1845
Designed Protestant church on Mount Zion - present state of the building, 1845. Foundations of a church being built in Jerusalem by the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews....the erection of the Church has been frustrated by every possible vexation, more especially by interference with the workmen; and, say the London Society, " whilst the Greeks, Roman Catholics, Armenians, and other minor sects of Christians, enjoy the permission to worship God in their respective temples, and whilst no privilege is withheld on the representations of French and Russian diplomacy, the pure Reformed religion of the British nation, to whom, under God, Turkey is indebted for the recovery of Syria, should be alone proscribed, and her Protestant children alone denied the possession of a consecrated building for the service of God..." From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the present state of the designed Protestant church on Mount Zion in 1845. The image showcases the foundations of a church being built in Jerusalem by the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews. However, it is evident that their efforts have been met with numerous obstacles and frustrations. The caption sheds light on these challenges faced by the London Society, emphasizing how interference with workmen has hindered the erection of this sacred building. It highlights an apparent disparity where other Christian sects such as Greeks, Roman Catholics, Armenians, and minor denominations enjoy worship privileges while British Protestants are denied a consecrated space to serve God. The text also points out that Britain played a significant role in Syria's recovery under God's guidance but questions why its pure Reformed religion is singled out for proscription. This sentiment reflects a sense of injustice felt by the Protestant children who yearn for their own place of worship amidst religious diversity. Taken from "Illustrated London News" in 1845, this engraving provides valuable insight into historical tensions surrounding religious freedom and construction projects during that era. Its monochromatic aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia to this depiction of Mount Zion's landscape and serves as a reminder of Victorian-era Britain's influence abroad.
