Departure on a Sled Expedition During the Time of Wintering, 1913. Creator: Nikolay Vasilyevich Pinegin
Departure on a Sled Expedition During the Time of Wintering, 1913. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs from the family archive of geologist Mikhail Alekseevich Pavlov (1884-1938). The collection depicts an expedition undertaken by Senior Lieutenant Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov (1877-1914) in the years 1912-14. Sedov, whose health was already failing when he set out for the pole by sled in early 1914, died before reaching his objective. The members of the expedition nonetheless carried out extensive surveying and scientific observations while wintering on Novaya Zemlya in 1912-13 and made significant contributions to knowledge of northern geography. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the spirit of adventure and exploration during a sled expedition in the harsh winter landscape of Novaya Zemlya, Russia in 1913. The image is part of a collection from the family archive of geologist Mikhail Alekseevich Pavlov, documenting an expedition led by Senior Lieutenant Georgii Iakovlevich Sedov in the early 20th century.
Despite facing challenging conditions and failing health, Sedov and his team embarked on a journey to reach the North Pole by sled. Tragically, Sedov passed away before achieving this goal, but his legacy lives on through the extensive surveying and scientific observations conducted during their winter stay on Novaya Zemlya.
The photograph showcases a group of explorers departing on their sleds with dogs leading the way through snowy terrain. It serves as a reminder of the courage and determination exhibited by these individuals in pursuit of knowledge about northern geography.
