Battlefield of New Hope Church, Georgia, No. 2, 1865-1866. From the mediums beginnings in the 1830s through the 1880s, most photographs were intimately scaled objects meant for the hand, the album, and the home. As the medium began being used to document landscapes and monuments in the 1850s, larger scale processes arose such as the glass-plate negative. The mammoth print truly seemed gargantuan in the 1860s. For much of the 20th century, the 8-x-10-inch gelatin silver print was the norm for photojournalism; these prints were destined for reproduction in books and magazines around the same scale

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Battlefield of New Hope Church, Georgia, No. 2,1865-1866" captures a significant moment in American history through the lens of George N. Barnard. In the mid-19th century, photography was primarily a personal and intimate medium, with small-scale prints meant for private consumption. However, as photographers began to document landscapes and monuments in the 1850s, larger scale processes emerged. This particular print showcases the mammoth size that became popular during the 1860s. The sheer magnitude of this photograph is awe-inspiring; it truly dwarfs its contemporaries from that era. Measuring at an impressive 8-x-10 inches, this gelatin silver print would have been considered massive by standards back then. Barnard's work exemplifies how photography evolved over time to not only capture personal moments but also document historical events such as battlefields like New Hope Church in Georgia. This image serves as a testament to the power of photography as a medium for preserving memories and sharing stories. Today, we can appreciate this remarkable piece thanks to Heritage Art/Heritage Images' efforts in preserving and showcasing historical photographs like these. As we gaze upon this image from our modern perspective, let us remember its significance in capturing an important chapter of American history forever etched on film by George N. Barnard himself.
