Aubrey Beardsley, c1893. Creator: Frederick Hollyer
Aubrey Beardsley, c1893. Portrait of British artist and eccentric Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), a leading figure in the aesthetic movement. Beardsley was diagnosed with tuberculosis at the age of seven, and between 1893 and 1898, he produced well over a thousand drawings. His decadent and erotic subject matter was frequently shocking and even pornographic. Some of his more extreme material was published privately, and only available to subscribers. Technological innovations in printing enabled his often intricate designs to be faithfully reproduced. Beardsley collaborated with Oscar Wilde, producing drawings for Wildes play " Salome", and he co-founded " The Studio" and " The Savoy" magazines. He also made caricatures and political cartoons. His brilliant career was cut short when he died of TB aged 25. From " The Best of Beardsley" edited by R. A. Walker, [The Bodley Head, London, 1948]

The portrait showcases his eccentricity and artistic brilliance, as he gazes into the distance with an air of mystery. Beardsley's life was marked by tragedy, having been diagnosed with tuberculosis at a tender age. Despite this adversity, he channeled his creativity into producing over a thousand drawings between 1893 and 1898. Known for his decadent and often shocking subject matter, Beardsley pushed boundaries with his erotic art that sometimes bordered on pornography. Some of his more extreme works were published privately and exclusively available to subscribers. Thanks to technological advancements in printing during that era, Beardsley's intricate designs could be faithfully reproduced. Beardsley collaborated closely with renowned playwright Oscar Wilde, creating illustrations for Wilde's play "Salome". Additionally, he co-founded influential magazines such as "The Studio" and "The Savoy" leaving an indelible mark on graphic design and illustration. Tragically, Beardsley's brilliant career was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis at just 25 years old.
