The Apocalypse: St. John Sees the Four Riders, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French, 1485-1561)
The Apocalypse: St. John Sees the Four Riders, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

The Apocalypse - St. John Sees the Four Riders, 1546-1556
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of Jean Duvet, a renowned French artist from the 16th century. This particular print is part of a bound volume containing an enthralling narrative of the Apocalypse, derived from Saint John's Revelation in the Bible. Jean Duvet dedicated several years to creating this series of 23 engravings, which are considered his greatest artistic achievement. The museum's volume is one of only seven complete sets known to exist today, making it an incredibly rare and valuable piece. Duvet was among France's first prominent printmakers and stood out as one of the most original artists during the 1500s. While primarily working in Langres, he drew inspiration from Italian art through circulating prints by artists like Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence can be seen in Duvet's use of solidly modeled human figures reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what truly sets Duvet apart is his idiosyncratic style characterized by crowded compositions that defy rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This distinctive approach adds depth and complexity to his artwork while showcasing his exceptional creativity. The print captures every intricate detail and nuance present in "The Apocalypse: St. John Sees the Four Riders" allowing viewers to appreciate Duvet's mastery firsthand. It serves as a testament to both his talent as an artist and his significant contribution to French Renaissance art history.
