Adoration of the Magi, c. 1500-1525. Creator: Giulio della Torre (Italian, c. 1481-bef 1563)
Adoration of the Magi, c. 1500-1525. Figures leading livestock descend the winding rocky landscape in the background while in the foreground, a crowd gathers before the Holy Family. The traveling figures compose the majority of this plaque, communicating the haste and urgency on their journey to see Christ. Above the Holy Family, a rustic hut creates a canopy. The Madonna and Child sit prominently at the right on a Renaissance bench, receiving the Three Kings. The first king kneels as the Christ Child bends to accept the gift. Joseph stands cross-armed behind the Madonna with two winged angels at his side. Behind him are the heads of an ox and an ass, traditional elements of nativity scenes. To the left three children play while a youth leans on a pagan altar. The torso of an ancient sculpture lies on the ground before it, demonstrating that Christ has come to replace the ancient gods. This low-relief plaque was once believed to have been destroyed in 1914 but is now thought to have been a part of the Count W. Pourtales collection in St. Petersburg, Russia. Adoration of the Magi resembles a 1506 relief by Riccio made for the Easter Candle in the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Adoration of the Magi" artwork, created by Giulio della Torre in the early 16th century. The composition transports us to a scene where figures leading livestock descend through a winding rocky landscape in the background. In the foreground, a crowd eagerly gathers before the Holy Family, capturing their attention and awe. The traveling figures dominate this plaque, conveying their haste and urgency on their journey to witness Christ's birth. Above them, a rustic hut forms a protective canopy over Mary and baby Jesus. Positioned prominently on a Renaissance bench at the right side, they receive the Three Kings with grace and humility. The first king kneels reverently as Jesus bends down to accept his gift. Joseph stands steadfastly behind Mary, flanked by two winged angels who serve as divine messengers. Traditional elements of nativity scenes are present too - an ox and an ass can be seen behind Joseph's figure. To one side of this joyous gathering, three children play while a youth leans casually against a pagan altar. Interestingly, lying before it is the torso of an ancient sculpture symbolizing that Christ has come to replace outdated beliefs. Once believed lost during World War I but later discovered as part of Count W. Pourtales' collection in St Petersburg, Russia; this low-relief plaque holds great historical significance. It bears resemblance to another relief made by Riccio for Padua's Basilica of St Anthony in 1506. Through this remarkable photograph print from Heritage Images, we can appreciate della Torre's masterful depiction of devotion and reverence towards Jesus' birth during that transformative period in history.
