74. Fol. 463r, Acts, historiated initial P, the Ascension, c. 1275-1300. Biblical manuscripts were highly prized and important possessions of churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities throughout medieval Europe. The biblical texts were known as the vulgate, the translations made by Saint Jerome in the fourth century from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, which became the definitive and official Latin version of the Roman Church. In the 13th century, the bible was, for the first time, produced as a single volume with an officially sanctioned sequence to its books and chapters as illustrated by this example. The very extensive decoration of this bible is arranged hierarchically to indicate the relative importance of the various texts so that full or almost full-page initials mark the openings of the first prologue, Genesis, and the first Gospel; historiated initials mark the beginning of each book and illuminated initials mark the Prologues

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the 74th folio of a biblical manuscript, specifically Acts, dating back to the late 13th or early 14th century. The intricate artwork featured here is known as a historiated initial P and depicts the momentous event of the Ascension. Created by an unknown artist, this piece exemplifies the high value and significance placed on biblical manuscripts during medieval times. During this era, these manuscripts were highly prized possessions held by churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities throughout Europe. The texts within these manuscripts were translations made by Saint Jerome in the fourth century from Hebrew and Greek into Latin – collectively known as the vulgate. This Latin version became officially recognized as the definitive translation for the Roman Church. What makes this particular example noteworthy is that it represents one of the first instances where a complete bible was produced in a single volume with an officially sanctioned sequence to its books and chapters. The extensive decoration seen here follows a hierarchical arrangement to emphasize each text's importance. Notably, full or almost full-page initials mark significant sections such as prologues, Genesis (the beginning), and even the first Gospel. The level of detail displayed in this illuminated manuscript truly captures both artistic skill and religious devotion prevalent during medieval times. Preserved through centuries of history, this print offers us a glimpse into an invaluable artifact that continues to inspire awe today.
