Springtime landscape of flowers, olive trees and giant prickly pear cactus, Marrakech, Morocco
Opuntia is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. Prickly pears typically grow with flat, rounded cladodes (also called platyclades) armed with two kinds of spines, large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles called glochids, that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. The fruit of prickly pears, commonly called cactus fruit, cactus fig, Indian fig, nopales or tuna in Spanish, is edible, although it must be peeled carefully to remove the small spines on the outer skin before consumption. If the outer layer is not properly removed, glochids can be ingested, causing discomfort of the throat, lips, and tongue, as the small spines are easily lodged in the skin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the vibrant essence of a springtime landscape in Marrakech, Morocco. The scene is adorned with an array of colorful flowers, majestic olive trees, and towering prickly pear cacti. Opuntia, a genus in the cactus family known for its distinctive features, takes center stage here. The prickly pears stand tall with their flat and rounded cladodes armed with two types of spines: large smooth fixed spines and small hairlike prickles called glochids. These tiny glochids easily penetrate the skin and detach from the plant, making them quite formidable. While these cacti may seem intimidating at first glance, they bear delicious fruits commonly referred to as cactus fruit or Indian figs. However, consuming these fruits requires careful peeling to remove the small spines on their outer skin. If not peeled properly, ingesting glochids can cause discomfort to one's throat, lips, and tongue due to their ability to lodge into the skin. In this mesmerizing photograph by Danita Delimont from Fine Art Storehouse, nature's beauty unfolds before our eyes without any human presence. The horizontal composition allows us to fully immerse ourselves in this uncultivated paradise where growth thrives abundantly under the warm sunlight of a serene day.
