Highland Cow
11th August 1945: A Highland cow belonging to farmer Duncan Stewart grazes in the bracken on the hills of Balmuick, Scotland. Kept mainly for their appearance, Highland cattle are too slow growing to provide beef and produce little milk. Farmers often cross Highland cattle with shorthorns, providing good beef cattle with a hardy constitution and a good temperament. Highland cattle are known for their striking appearance, with long shaggy coats and impressive horns. While they may not be ideal for beef production due to their slow growth rate and low milk yield, they are valued for their hardy constitution and gentle temperament. Farmers like Stewart often cross Highland cattle with shorthorns to create robust beef cattle that thrive in Scotland's challenging climate.
In this image by Kurt Hutton from Picture Post/Getty Images, we see a glimpse of rural life in post-war Scotland. The cow stands out against the rolling hills, embodying the resilience and simplicity of farm life in this picturesque region. This archival photograph is a reminder of the deep connection between humans and animals, as well as the timeless beauty of the Scottish highlands.
