Humour puffed sleeves ladies fashion 19th century cartoon
This is a cartoon etching by the well-known Victorian social caricaturist / cartoonist George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878), dated November 1st, 1829. (1829 is in the reign of William IV, but most of Cruikshanks artistic work was in the long reign of Queen Victoria.) Cruikshank went on to illustrate a number of the books of Charles Dickens. Title: Elbow room Description: Two of Cruikshanks themes come together here - the lady at the piano, and the overblown nature of some aspects of ladies fashion in the 19th century. Here, a lady pianist with a strongly-corsetted thin waist sports balloon-like puffed sleeves. The sleeves are so large, they give plenty of elbow-room. Designed Etched & Published by Geo. Elbow Room - A Playful Twist on 19th Century Ladies Fashion
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this whimsical cartoon etching by the renowned Victorian caricaturist George Cruikshank, we are transported back to the year 1829. The image captures two of Cruikshank's recurring themes - the elegant lady at the piano and the exaggerated nature of women's fashion during that era. The central figure is a lady pianist, her waist tightly corseted to achieve an impossibly thin silhouette. However, it is her balloon-like puffed sleeves that steal the show. These oversized sleeves provide ample "elbow room" allowing our musician to play with ease while adding a touch of humor to her ensemble. Cruikshank's keen eye for detail and his ability to capture social commentary through art shine in this piece. As one of Charles Dickens' frequent collaborators, he was known for his satirical illustrations that often highlighted societal absurdities. This print serves as a delightful reminder of both the extravagance and playfulness inherent in 19th century fashion. It invites us to reflect on how trends can sometimes become comically exaggerated over time. With its intricate engravings and clever puns, "Elbow Room" showcases Cruikshank's mastery as an artist and storyteller. Whether displayed in a gallery or cherished within a personal collection, this print transports viewers into a world where wit meets style in perfect harmony.
