Two scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry
Two scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry. The Tapestry is actually an embroidered length of cloth rather than a tapestry and measures around 70 metres. It portrays the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, who overcame Harold, King of England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It contains around seventy scenes, though the last section is missing. From "French Pictures: Drawn With Pen and Pencil" by the Rev. Samuel G. Green, D.D. Published by The Religious Tract Society, London, 1878

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two scenes from the famous Bayeux Tapestry, a remarkable embroidered cloth that spans an impressive 70 meters in length. Unlike its name suggests, it is not actually a tapestry but rather an intricate piece of embroidery. Created in the 11th century, this historical masterpiece depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. In this particular image, we are treated to two distinct scenes from the tapestry. The first scene portrays William's victorious army crossing the English Channel towards England with determination and purpose. The second scene captures the pivotal Battle of Hastings itself, where Harold, King of England, valiantly fights against William's forces. The Bayeux Tapestry consists of approximately seventy such scenes that vividly narrate this significant chapter in history. However, it is worth noting that unfortunately, its final section is missing. This stunning photograph was taken by Nastasic and featured in "French Pictures: Drawn With Pen and Pencil" by Rev. Samuel G. Green in 1878. It serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical importance while offering viewers a glimpse into one of Europe's most defining moments – the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
