The front of the Residency, Lucknow, 1858 (b / w photo)

5922853 The front of the Residency, Lucknow, 1858 (b/w photo) by Beato, Felice (Felix) (1825-c.1908); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Residency - showing the room in which Sir Henry Lawrence was killed, Lucknow, 1858.
Photograph by Felice Beato (1825-1907), Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), 1858.
The epic siege and relief of the Lucknow Residency was one of the most famous incidents of the Indian Mutiny. The mutineers began attacking the Residency compound on 4 July 1857. Sir Henry Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, was killed almost immediately when a shell exploded in the room where he was resting. Command passed to Colonel John Inglis of the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot, which formed the main British part of the garrison. The Residency itself stood on high ground above the River Gumti, overlooking the city. In this image, Beato deliberately positioned an Indian to mark the room in which Lawrence had been mortally wounded.); eNational Army Museum; British, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the front of the Residency in Lucknow, India, in 1858. Taken by Felice Beato during the Indian Mutiny, this image holds historical significance as it showcases the room where Sir Henry Lawrence met his tragic end. The Residency was under siege by mutineers from July 4th, 1857 onwards, making it a pivotal location during this tumultuous period. Sir Henry Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, lost his life when a shell exploded in the very room depicted in this photograph. Following his death, command passed to Colonel John Inglis of the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot. Positioned on high ground above River Gumti with a view overlooking the city, the Residency served as a crucial stronghold for British forces. Beato's composition is deliberate and poignant; he includes an Indian figure to mark the exact spot where Lawrence suffered his mortal wound. This detail adds depth and emotion to an already powerful image. The epic siege and subsequent relief of Lucknow Residency remains one of history's most renowned incidents from the Indian Mutiny. This print allows us to reflect upon that turbulent time and pay homage to those who fought bravely within these walls.
