The Battle of Culloden in 1746 ended the Jacobite rebellion, which aimed to put the Scottish Charles Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) on the British throne. The two Highlanders in this scene are among those who were mercilessly hunted down afterwards. A typical small Scottish shield lies on the ground beside them.
