The Battle of Cape Passaro, 11 August 1718, 1767 (oil on canvas)

7337641 The Battle of Cape Passaro, 11 August 1718, 1767 (oil on canvas) by Paton, Richard (1717-91); 132.1x213.4 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Richard Paton
A depiction of an action during the war with Spain, 1718-1720. In 1717, to strengthen the Treaty of Utrecht, Britain, France and Austria contemplated ceding Sicily to the Emperor. This arrangement displeased Spain, who wanted to recover the island. Admiral Sir George Byng was accordingly sent to the Mediterranean. Early August found Byng's fleet at anchor in the Bay of Naples. The morning of 11 August found Byng close to his enemy and to windward of him off Cape Passaro, the south-eastern tip of Sicily. Spain and England were not formally at war at this time, since the war did not officially break out until December 1718, but once the Spanish fired on the nearest English ships, this gave Byng his excuse to attack.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas print captures the intense and dramatic Battle of Cape Passaro, which took place on 11 August 1718. Painted by Richard Paton in 1767, this historical artwork showcases a pivotal moment during the war between Britain and Spain from 1718-1720. The scene depicts Admiral Sir George Byng's fleet engaging with the Spanish forces off the coast of Sicily. Despite not being officially at war yet, tensions were high as Spain sought to reclaim control of the island. When the Spanish fired upon English ships, it gave Byng the justification he needed to retaliate. The intricate details and vivid colors in this painting bring to life the chaos and intensity of battle at sea. The strategic positioning of ships, billowing smoke from cannon fire, and waves crashing against rocky cliffs all contribute to a sense of urgency and action. As you gaze upon this historic masterpiece, you can almost hear the sounds of cannons booming and feel the tension in the air. It serves as a powerful reminder of past conflicts and triumphs at sea, immortalized forever in this artwork from Richard Paton.
