Photograph, Mullick Photo House, India, 1920s circa.
The 10th Duke of Cambridges Own Lancers (Hodsons Horse) were one of the Indian Armys cavalry regiments selected to be Indianised during the 1920s. The appointment of new British subalterns was ended and entirely new Indian officer cadres formed. Previously, all Indian commissioned officers had ranked below the most junior British subaltern, and unable to command either British troops or their own units.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Hodsons Horse, an Indian cavalry regiment, during the 1920s. In the image, we see a British officer accompanied by two Indian officers and Indian NCOs (Non-Commissioned Officers). During this period, Hodsons Horse underwent a transformation as part of the Indian Army's efforts to be more inclusive and representative. The regiment was one of several cavalry units chosen for "Indianisation" which involved replacing British subalterns with new Indian officer cadres. Prior to these reforms, all Indian commissioned officers held lower ranks than even the most junior British subaltern. This meant they were unable to command either British troops or their own units effectively. However, with this change came newfound opportunities for Indians to lead within their own military. The photograph is credited to Mullick Photo House from India in the 1920s. It is part of an album that also includes images associated with 4th Hodsons Horse and 9th Hodsons Horse during World War One (1914-1918) and throughout India between 1920 and 1938. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this image serves as a visual testament to the evolving dynamics within Hodsons Horse and highlights important strides made towards equality within the ranks of the Indian Army during this era.
