Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery ; © Desmond Banks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating print titled "Food and Fruits of Empire" takes us back to a time when the British Empire was at its peak. Created by William Nicholson, this colour lithograph is part of a collection commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board in the 1920s and 1930s. Displayed proudly at Manchester Art Gallery, this artwork represents an era when the British government aimed to promote sales of goods produced within the empire. The poster campaign sought to instill a sense of pride in Britons for their empire's people, places, and products. The image itself is a testament to the diversity and abundance found within the empire. It showcases an array of delicious fruits from different corners of the world, symbolizing both wealth and exoticism. The bold colors used by Nicholson bring these fruits to life, making them almost jump off the page. However, it is important to acknowledge that these posters also raise uncomfortable questions about colonial legacies. While they were created with good intentions during their time, they now serve as reminders of Britain's imperial past and its impact on various cultures around the globe. Despite these complexities, this print remains an intriguing piece that allows us to reflect on history while appreciating its artistic beauty. As we gaze upon this artwork today, we are reminded that art has a unique ability to spark conversations about our shared heritage and challenge our understanding of historical events.
