A Waste of Waters, 1907 (oil on canvas)

2956811 A Waste of Waters, 1907 (oil on canvas)
by Hemy, Charles Napier (1841-1917); 121.9x182.9 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: The title of the picture comes from Robert Southey, his poem Madoc of 1805 recounting the ocean voyage of a medieval Welsh king to America: Day after day, day after day the same... A weary waste of waters!
Hemy, a devout Catholic, forged a deep spiritual bond with the sea when he was only nine years old, enduring the passage from Liverpool to Melbourne with his family, a three month journey; their trip back to England, four years later, would take twice as long. By the time the Hemys returned to Newcastle, Charles was an experienced sailor at the age of thirteen. The sea would haunt him for the rest of his life, as he later wrote, it entered my soul, it was imprinted on my mind, and I never forgot it, I have gone on painting it all my life
Hemy considered his best work to be produced in 1908, at the age of 67, when the present picture was exhibited. A Waste of Waters is the culmination of decades spent sketching the water- a vast, empty sea, churns slowly as gulls swoop overhead.

A Waste of Waters, 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting by Charles Napier Hemy. The title of the artwork draws inspiration from Robert Southey's poem "Madoc" which describes the monotonous and seemingly endless expanse of the ocean. Hemy, a devout Catholic, developed a profound spiritual connection with the sea at a young age during his family's arduous voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne. The artist's deep affinity for the sea continued throughout his life, as he once stated that it had imprinted itself on his soul and mind. In this particular piece, created when Hemy was 67 years old, he believed he had produced some of his finest work. "A Waste of Waters" showcases decades spent observing and sketching water in all its vastness and emptiness. In this mesmerizing scene captured on canvas, we witness the slow churning motion of an expansive sea while seagulls gracefully swoop overhead. The composition evokes a sense of tranquility mixed with awe-inspiring grandeur. As viewers gaze upon this masterpiece, they are transported to an ethereal world where time seems suspended amidst nature's majestic beauty. This print allows us to appreciate Hemy's artistic prowess and immerse ourselves in his lifelong fascination with capturing the essence of the sea. It serves as a testament to both his technical skill as well as his emotional connection to one of nature's most powerful forces - forever etched into our collective memory through paint strokes that resonate even today.
