The artist and subject shared a close friendship, as Gray was not only an accomplished painter but also a renowned botanist and chemist. Measuring 57x45.9 cm, this oil on card artwork currently resides at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Interestingly, it was originally gifted to Bewick's mother and remained within the Bewick family for over 150 years. The oval composition adds a touch of sophistication to the painting while highlighting his youthful features.
