Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936) was at the same time an important Russian composer, conductor and pedagogue. It was his great admirer and patron, the music publisher Mitrofan Belayev, who commissioned Repins portrait of Glazunov. The painter, who frequents the evenings of the " Belayev Circle", knows the musician well, of whom he makes several drawn portraits. A fervent lover of Repin, Glazunov used, in his first masterpiece in 1885, the symphonic poem Stenka Razine, a famous traditional song evoking hauls. He also dedicated his Oriental Rhapsody for large orchestra to him in 1889.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of Ilya Efimovich Repin's 1887 oil on canvas painting, "Alexander Glazunov". The artwork is housed in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The subject of this portrait is Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936), an influential figure in Russian music history. Glazunov was not only a composer but also a conductor and pedagogue. Commissioned by his devoted admirer and patron, Mitrofan Belayev, Repin beautifully captures Glazunov's essence. Repin was well-acquainted with the musician as they both frequented the evenings of the "Belayev Circle" where artists and musicians gathered to exchange ideas and inspiration. In fact, Repin had previously created several drawn portraits of Glazunov. Glazunov's deep appreciation for Repin's work can be seen through his own compositions. In 1885, he used one of Repin's favorite pieces, the symphonic poem "Stenka Razine" as inspiration for his first masterpiece. Additionally, he dedicated his Oriental Rhapsody for large orchestra to Repin in 1889. This print offers us a glimpse into the world of two great artistic minds colliding - that of Ilya Efimovich Repin and Alexander Glazunov - leaving behind an enduring legacy within Russian art and music history.
