EDITORS COMMENTS
Meet Charles XII, the fearless King of Sweden who ruled from 1697 to 1718. This striking print, taken from Hutchinson's History of the Nations in 1915, captures the monarch's regal presence and unwavering determination. Dressed in his finest armor and sporting a majestic wig, Charles XII exudes confidence and authority. His piercing gaze seems to bore into the viewer, as if daring them to challenge his reign.
Born in 1682, Charles XII ascended to the throne at just 15 years old after the death of his father. He went on to lead Sweden through several wars, including conflicts with Poland and Russia. Despite being defeated by Peter I of Russia at Poltava in 1709, Charles XII continued to fight on until his tragic death at age 36.
This iconic portrait not only showcases Charles XII's impressive military prowess but also highlights his enduring legacy as one of Sweden's most beloved monarchs. The black-and-white illustration is a testament to the power of artistry and historical documentation, allowing us to glimpse into the lives of those who shaped Europe's past.
