EDITORS COMMENTS
The Temple of Fortune, known as the Temple of Concord and the Temple of Jupiter Tonans" is a captivating print that takes us back to ancient Rome. The etching with brown wash beautifully captures the grandeur and architectural details of this historical site. The image showcases the remnants of what was once a magnificent temple complex. On the left, we see eight columns belonging to the portico of the Temple of Saturn, while on the right, three columns stand tall from the Temple of Vespasian. These structures are not only visually stunning but also hold great historical significance. Rebuilt by L. Munatius Plancus in 42 BC after being consumed by fire, this temple complex has witnessed numerous restorations throughout its existence. It survived fires in 283 and 400 AD before finally being restored again. Intriguingly, in 1810, three columns from another temple were excavated and re-erected nearby on a new basement designed by architect Giuseppe Camporesi. This blend of different temples within one frame adds an extra layer to our understanding and appreciation for Roman architecture. "The Temple of Fortune" offers us a glimpse into Rome's rich history and cultural heritage. Its majestic presence reminds us that even centuries later, these ancient structures continue to inspire awe and admiration.
