EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a pair of Afghan spectacles and their accompanying case, dating back to approximately 1879. Crafted from glass, wire, and papier-mâché, these unique artifacts offer a glimpse into the rich history of Afghanistan during the 19th century. The spectacles themselves are delicately constructed with precision and care. The intricate wirework adds an element of elegance to the functional design. Encased in papier-mâché, which was commonly used for its durability and versatility during this time period, these spectacles were meant to withstand the test of time. What makes this particular set even more fascinating is its connection to Edward Orford Kelly, a soldier in the 25th Regiment of Foot (King's Own Borderers). As his regiment was stationed in the Khyber Pass throughout the Second Afghan War from 1878-1880, Kelly acquired this curious souvenir as a memento from his experiences. These spectacles not only serve as a reminder of Afghanistan's cultural heritage but also shed light on the military operations that took place during this tumultuous period. They symbolize both protection and communication - two vital aspects that played significant roles in maintaining stability between Afghanistan and India. Now preserved at London's National Army Museum, this print allows us to appreciate not only their aesthetic beauty but also their historical significance. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity across different cultures and eras.
