Ireland captain Con Martin on the ball during the 1950 British Home Championship

Football - 1950 British Home Championship - Wales 0 IFA Ireland XI 0
Irelands Con Martin on the ball at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham.
The game was the last time the Belfast-based IFA fielded an all-Ireland team. Martin was one of the four players fielded that day who were born in what is now the Republic of Ireland and had played for the Dublin-based FAI XI in their 1950 World Cup qualifiers. Since this game was also a qualifier for the 1950 FIFA World Cup, the situation led to controversy.
FIFA intervened, after complaints from the FAI, and subsequently restricted players eligibility based on the political border

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic moment when Ireland captain Con Martin skillfully maneuvers the ball during the 1950 British Home Championship. The match, held at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, marked a significant turning point in Irish football history. It was on this day that the Belfast-based IFA (Irish Football Association) fielded their last all-Ireland team. Martin, an exceptional player born in what is now known as the Republic of Ireland, had previously represented Dublin-based FAI XI in their 1950 World Cup qualifiers. This fact caused controversy as this particular game also served as a qualifier for the prestigious 1950 FIFA World Cup. Following complaints from FAI (Football Association of Ireland), FIFA intervened and implemented new regulations regarding players' eligibility based on political borders rather than solely on club affiliations. This decision forever altered Irish football dynamics and sparked debates about national identity within sports. Colorsport's remarkable image freezes this historic moment, showcasing Martin's undeniable talent and determination on the pitch. It serves as a reminder of how sport can transcend politics and ignite change within society.
