Great Britains Sid Barras, with Belgiums Eddy Merckx, behind, at Lee Valley Park, East London (later site of the Olympic VeloPark).
The event was organised by boxing promoter Mike Barrett and was was informally known as the Merckx Meeting as it attracted arguably the greatest cyclist of all time - Eddy Merckx - as well as other top riders from the continent.
