100 years of the RAF
No 26 Squadron Bristol Belvedere HC.1, based at Khormaksar, Aden, delivers supplies and mail to a remote location in the mountainous Radfan area of the country.
The RAF Belvederes were involved in combat in Aden Emergency and Borneo (during the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation).
Twenty-six Belvederes were built, entering service as the Belvedere HC Mark 1.
The Belvederes were originally designed for use with the Royal Navy but were later adapted to carry 18 fully equipped troops with a total load capacity of 6, 000 lb. The aircraft could operate through only one engine in the event of an emergency. In that case, the remaining engine would automatically run up to double power to compensate.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF). The image showcases a Bristol Belvedere HC. 1 helicopter from No 26 Squadron, stationed at Khormaksar, Aden, as it delivers vital supplies and mail to a remote location nestled within the rugged Radfan mountains. The RAF Belvederes played an instrumental role during combat operations in both Aden Emergency and Borneo, amidst the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation. Originally designed for use by the Royal Navy, these helicopters were later modified to accommodate 18 fully equipped troops with an impressive total load capacity of 6,000 lb. In case of emergencies, they could continue operating on just one engine while automatically doubling its power output. The photograph has been meticulously restored to remove any detritus or imperfections that may have accumulated over time. It portrays the barren yet awe-inspiring terrain of the mountainous region where this historic aircraft operated during the Cold War era. As we celebrate 100 years of RAF excellence, this image serves as a poignant reminder of their unwavering dedication and commitment to serving our nation. It pays tribute not only to this remarkable squadron but also highlights their crucial contributions throughout history.
