Discover the enchanting beauty of the Sycamore Gap tree, immortalized in this captivating collection of prints. Nestled within the dramatic dip of Hadrian’s Wall in the picturesque Northumberland National Park, this iconic tree claimed the prestigious title of English Tree of the Year in the Woodland Trust’s awards back in 2016. Capturing the essence of history and nature, these prints showcase the Sycamore Gap tree in all its glory, with the Roman Milecastle 39, affectionately known as Castle Nick, gracing the background. Perched delicately in a nick in the hillside, this historic site has been a subject of fascination for generations.

The site, meticulously excavated between 1908 and 1911, and later re-explored from 1982 to 1987, reveals intriguing details of ancient Roman life. The milecastle, occupied until the late 4th century, boasts remnants of a stone oven and a rectangular building with a sunken floor, adorned with Roman artifacts. In the 18th century, a quaint milking house found its place in the west corner, adding another layer to the site's rich history. Adjacent to this historical marvel stands a protective circular wall, guarding a young replacement sycamore sapling from the curious nibbles of local sheep. This dedication to preservation is a testament to the site's significance. 

In a poignant turn of events, the large sycamore tree that had proudly graced Hadrian’s Wall for centuries faced a tragic fate. On the morning of September 28, its majestic form was found broken, intentionally toppled by vandals. However, through these exquisite prints, the spirit of the Sycamore Gap tree lives on, inviting you to cherish its enduring beauty and historical importance.
