Playing billiards in United Seamans Service club, 1944

A Chinese-American member of the United Seamans Service plays pool or snooker at the London club during Christmas, 1944. The USS was founded in 1942 to promote the welfare of American seafarers and their dependents, seafarers of all nations, US government military and civilian personnel, and other persons engaged in the maritime industry. There are only seven port centres open around the world today but there were many more during World War Two.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of relaxation and camaraderie among members of the United Seamans Service (USS) club in London during the Christmas season of 1944. The Chinese-American man in the foreground is intently focused on the game of snooker or pool, his cue poised above the table. The USS, founded in 1942, was an essential organization that promoted the welfare of American seafarers and their dependents, as well as seafarers of all nations, US government military and civilian personnel, and other persons engaged in the maritime industry. With the chaos and hardships of World War II raging on, these clubs provided a much-needed respite for weary travelers and service members. The USS had numerous port centers open around the world during this time, but today only seven remain. The club's banner and American flag proudly displayed in the background serve as a reminder of the strong sense of community and unity that bound these individuals together, even in the midst of war.
