Welwitschia mirabilis
Welwitschia mirabilis. This unique plant consists of a woody stem and two large leaves. It is evergreen and the leaves grow continuously along the ground, often becoming frayed. W. mirabilis is endemic to the Namib desert, the most arid environment on Earth. It survives this environment partly because of its roots, which can grow to depths of 30 metres. The oldest living plant is 1500 years old. The largest leaf found is 6 metres long and 2 metres wide. Photographed in the Namib desert

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Welwitschia mirabilis, a truly unique plant that thrives in the harshest of environments. With its woody stem and two large leaves, this evergreen wonder continuously grows along the arid ground of the Namib desert, often displaying frayed edges as a testament to its endurance. Endemic to this unforgiving landscape, W. mirabilis owes its survival partly to its extraordinary roots that plunge an astonishing 30 meters into the earth. What makes this botanical marvel even more awe-inspiring is its age-defying longevity. The oldest living specimen has gracefully withstood the test of time for an astounding 1500 years. As if that weren't impressive enough, it boasts colossal leaves measuring up to 6 meters in length and 2 meters in width. Photographed against the backdrop of Namibia's breathtaking Namib desert, this image captures nature at its most unusual and ancient state. Its sheer uniqueness sparks curiosity about our planet's diverse flora and highlights how life can adapt and thrive under extreme conditions. This photograph from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of both nature's resilience and beauty—a true testament to the wonders waiting to be discovered within our own world.
