Bleached coral

Bleached coral. The colour in the coral is lost due to the expulsion of symbiotic unicellular algae called zooxanthellae that live within its tissues. In this case, the zooxanthellae have been expelled due to high water temperature. Some of the coral here appears brown as it still contains the zooxanthellae, which is needed to provide the coral with nutrients and thus maintain its colour. Photographed in the Maldives, Indian Ocean

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the devastating effects of bleached coral in the Maldives, Indian Ocean. The once vibrant and colorful coral reef has lost its brilliance due to the expulsion of symbiotic unicellular algae called zooxanthellae. These tiny organisms live within the coral's tissues and provide it with essential nutrients, maintaining its vivid hues. However, high water temperatures have forced the corals to expel their zooxanthellae, resulting in a loss of color. While some sections still retain a brownish hue as they cling onto these vital algae, others appear stark white - a haunting reminder of their struggle for survival. The image serves as a poignant representation of nature's destruction caused by rising ocean temperatures. It highlights the urgent need to address climate change and protect our fragile ecosystems from further damage. As global warming continues unabated, these beautiful marine creatures face an uncertain future. In this stunning underwater shot, we witness not only the physical damage inflicted upon these delicate invertebrates but also glimpse into an entire ecosystem on the brink of collapse. Let this image serve as a call to action for all who view it – reminding us that every effort counts in preserving our precious oceans and safeguarding marine life from extinction.
