EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from September 1989, we are transported back to Lostwithiel, Cornwall, where five lucky pupils are embarking on a truly extraordinary journey to Fowey School. With beaming smiles and an air of excitement, these young scholars have the privilege of traveling in style aboard a magnificent Rolls Royce. The story behind this enchanting scene unfolds at an auction of promises held at the Community Centre. Parents eagerly bid for unique experiences, and it was Simon May, Rory Jones, James Foster, Chris Terry, and Kieran Piper who struck gold. Their parents secured a pledge from David Williams of the Crown Inn to chauffeur their children in his prestigious Roller. As they gather around the gleaming vehicle with its registration number "907 KDW" anticipation fills the air. Dressed smartly in their school uniforms adorned with flying angel badges representing Fowey School's emblematic symbol, these youngsters couldn't contain their joy. Photographer Jonathan Barker captures this timeless moment that showcases not only the students' remarkable opportunity but also highlights the close-knit community spirit found within Lostwithiel. The image serves as a reminder that dreams can come true when communities unite for a common cause. This cherished photograph is now preserved at Royal Cornwall Museum as part of Cornish history—a testament to childhood wonderment and unforgettable journeys made possible by kind-hearted individuals like David Williams and supportive communities like Lostwithiel.
