EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Britannia Tubular Bridge, a masterpiece of engineering that spans the Menai Straits in Wales. The original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson, commissioned for a London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) poster, beautifully captures the grandeur and significance of this historic structure. Designed by the renowned Robert Stephenson and completed in 1850, the Britannia Tubular Bridge served as a vital link for trains traveling on the Chester and Holyhead Railway. Its construction provided a crucial passageway from mainland Wales to Anglesey, ultimately terminating at Holyhead – an important port for those embarking on journeys to Ireland. The bridge's tubular design was revolutionary for its time, showcasing Stephenson's innovative engineering prowess. This remarkable feat of Victorian engineering not only facilitated efficient rail travel but also became an architectural marvel admired by all who beheld it. In this photo print, we can appreciate both Wilkinson's artistic talent and his ability to capture the essence of this historical landmark. The image transports us back to a time when steam locomotives chugged across these iron tracks against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this photograph immortalizes an era where railway bridges like the Britannia Tubular Bridge symbolized progress and connected communities across vast distances.
