The Western Front of World War I was marked by a stalemate, with both sides entrenched in a deadly game of attrition. However, the Austro-Hungarian High Command, seeking to gain an advantage, ordered a cavalry attack against the Italian forces near the Isonzo River. The attack on May 24, 1915, was a desperate attempt to break through the Italian lines and turn the tide of the war.
