EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is Plate 38 from the Zoologie Atlas of the renowned French naturalist and explorer, Louis-Isidore Duperrey's Voyage de la Coquille (1822-1825). The plate features a vibrant and intricately patterned Wrasse fish, a member of the Labridae family, commonly found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Wrasse in this illustration is depicted in its stunning orange and white striped form, with distinctive vertical bars and a long, flowing tail. This beautiful fish is a prime example of the diverse and captivating designs found among the bony fishes, or Actinopterygii, and the ray-finned fishes, or Perciformes. Duperrey's expedition, which took place in the early 19th century, was a significant contribution to the scientific community, resulting in the discovery and documentation of numerous new species. The meticulously detailed illustrations in the Zoologie Atlas, such as this one, were produced to accurately record and preserve the natural history of the many fascinating creatures encountered during the voyage. The Victorian era, during which this illustration was created, was a time of great interest in natural history and exploration. This stunning Wrasse image is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the important role that scientific exploration and documentation plays in our understanding of the natural world.
