EDITORS COMMENTS
Vasco Núñez de Balboa: The Discovery of the Pacific Ocean in 1513 This historic photograph captures the image of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a bold and intrepid Spanish explorer, who is famously known for his groundbreaking discovery of the Pacific Ocean in 1513. Born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Extremadura, Spain, in 1475, Balboa embarked on an adventurous journey that would forever change the course of history. Balboa first arrived in the Americas in 1508 as part of Alonso Alvarez de Pineda's expedition. He later joined the service of Alonso de Ojeda and was sent to explore the coast of present-day Colombia in 1510. Balboa's thirst for discovery and exploration led him to venture inland, where he established the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, Santa Maria la Antigua del Darién, in 1510. In 1513, Balboa's ambition and curiosity drove him to cross the Isthmus of Panama, leading a group of men to the Pacific Ocean. On September 27, 1513, Balboa and his men gazed upon the vast expanse of the Pacific, marking the first European sighting of the ocean. This discovery opened up a new world of possibilities for Spanish exploration and colonization, leading to the establishment of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. Balboa's achievements were not without controversy, however. He was later accused of treason and was executed by the orders of his superior, Pedro Arias de Avila, in 1517. Despite the tragic end to his life, Balboa's legacy as a pioneering explorer lives on, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his historic achievement. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still being explored and discovered, and the spirit of adventure knew no bounds.
